Good Night was the very first short to air on television and thus introduced all five of the Simpsons family. It is a simple story about childhood fears based on ignorance and how parents often over look these fears.
Plot Synopsis
Homer and Marge tuck in each one of their children one by one :

First, Homer tucks in Bart, he worries about the nature of existence through the nature of the human mind and brain. Bark asks "What is the mind? Is it just a system of impluses or is it something tangible?" Attempting to calm Bart's fears by making light the issue, Homer replies "What is mind? No matter. What is matter? Never mind.", followed by a stunningly gay laugh. Bart thanks his father in a way that clearly says it was a useless answer. Homer misses his tone, says goodnight and turns out the lights.

Then, as Marge tucks in Lisa, an exchange of bedtime pleasantries is exchanged along the lines of "Sweet dreams", etc. Marge says "…don't let the bedbugs bite." just before turning out the lights and thus leaving Lisa in the dark to wonder (and worry) about the existence of bedbugs and what possible harm a bite can cause.
Finally, Marge sings Rock-a-Bye-Baby as she attempts rocks Maggie to sleep. Maggie, on the other hand, imagines herself to be the baby sung about in the tune and is terrified as "the baby comes crashing down, cradle and all."
When Marge and Homer settle down in bed themselves, Homer remarks "We may be the best parents in the whole world." and thus sarcastically pointing out the main point of this Simpson Short. Soon afterwards, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie barge into their bedroom to sleep in bed with Homer and Marge.
